“A Modest Proposal”

Jonathan Swift book “A Modest Proposal” was a very interesting read. The problem he identifies in his society is that children are huge burdens on their parents. Swift’s way out of this is selling or eating children, I am not to sure he should be taken serious on this one. I totally think he is joking but if he is not that is totally sick and wrong. The way he jokes about this was wrong and made me really not want to read anymore of it but I did because it was for class. This is totally not logical, why kill a child they didn’t ask to be put on this earth so why should they have to go through something like this. If a parent is having a hard time living their life then they shouldn’t have children. I totally understand why he wrote this though he wants the readers to think and come up with a more logical solution, which is totally don’t have sex if you can’t deal with what happens next it’s just that simple.

  1. Hi Brenda!
I completely agree with your feelings about Jonathan Swift's "Modest Proposal". I am a mom of two and I was mortified as I was reading this article. I share you feelings on not wanting to read on. However, I am glad that I did because the more that I continued to read, I realized that the article wasn't really about killing babies at all. The Irish were being oppressed by the barbaric English landowners and Swift simply wanted them to stand up for themselves. I think you may have a better time with these assignments if you take into consideration the various characteristics of a good reader that we learned from Vladimir Nabokov in our first blog assignment. Always reread, look up words that are unfamiliar and try to pay attention to the story between the lines! Other than that, thanks for posting!

  2. Hello Brenda,

I definitely agree with you about how interesting this read was. Yet, I found it to be one of my favorite satires. When I first read this essay, I was completely thrown off. I even had to reread a few paragraphs just to make sure I wasn't reading it wrong. Though, it isn't all about the eating of babies, it was mostly about the problems that Dublin was experiencing during those times. If it helps make sure to look at the little details and ask yourself why is the story being written in such a way. Also, looking up what was happening during these certain time period could help.
    Thanks for posting!
